The Essentials

First off, you’ll need a court. The court for pickleball is 20 feet by 44 feet.

Play can be singles or doubles. In singles, one person plays another. In doubles, two people play against two other people.

Rules and Scoring

To know how to play pickleball, you need to know the rules.

Pickleball is played to 11 points. The winner is the person or team that gets to 11 points first and is 2 points clear.

Only the serving person or team can score points. A point is scored when the server’s opponent fails to return the ball or hits it out of bounds.

If the serving team fails to return the ball or hits it out of the court, the serve switches to the other team. No point is scored.

In doubles, both players on the serving team get to serve. So, if the serving team loses the point the second player on the serving team gets to serve.

In doubles, the first team to serve only gets one serve before it switches to start the game. So, when the serving team loses the point at the start of the match, the serve switches to the opponent

The server starts in the right-hand quadrant. If the serving team wins the point, the server moves to the left-hand quadrant to serve the next point. If the server continues to win, they move back and forth from quadrant to quadrant until they lose the serve.

The server should stand behind the backline of the court and serve diagonally across the net. The serve should be an underhand swing. The ball must be in the air when it is hit on the serve. It should not bounce first.

Volleying and Bounces

The pickleball court has a line on each side of the court 7 feet behind the net. This is called the no-volley zone. Players may not volley the ball in this zone.

Volleys are not permitted when receiving the serve. When the ball is returned from the serve (after bouncing) it must also bounce again on the server’s side. After this sequence of play, volleys are permitted behind the 7-foot line.

No player may enter the no-serve zone unless the ball has bounced in that area. Once the player has played their shot from the no-serve zone they must retreat behind the line again.

A pickleball is a heavier Wiffle ball. This weight allows the ball to move more truly in the wind.

Players use paddles to play pickleball. These are solid, sort of like a large ping pong paddle.

Pickleball paddles are made from a variety of materials. To learn more about them, check out the best pickleball paddles.

The net is 36 inches tall and looks similar to a tennis court net.
