SUNLIGHT And YOUR SKIN

Sun is always an important factor and plays a positive as well negative role in skin condition. Sunlight is involved in several skin diseases at the same time it is used as treatment and multiple skin conditions.

Although as per my experience SUNLIGHT is more disease-producing and can itself cause few peculiar diseases. I will discuss here few very common skin problems caused by Sun Light exposure

TANNING and Generalized Darkening of the skin

In India, fairness is itself a kind of taboo and even in the rest of the world. Continuous sun exposure to the body gradually causes tanning or darkening of skin especially thick skin and prominent part of the face the like forehead, around eye orbit, hand, back of the neck. Diabetes, thyroid further increase the tanning process.

Chemical peel and sunscreen is the best way to treat. Glycolic chemical peel 30-50% over the face is an effective method. It takes multiple sitting and many weeks to complete the peel procedure.

SUNBURN

One of the most common manifestations of sunlight exposure. This condition is common in white skin. Redness, itching, burning sensation, peeling, and blackening just like burned skin are common features. Continuous exposure to sunlight over prominent parts of the body like the face, nose, back, neck, is the main site for sunburn. Steroid, sunscreen is the main treatment line.

POLY MORPHIC LIGHT ERUPTION (PLE)

Due to sun exposure skin patches and itching, may arise. The patch may be whitish, yellowish, blister type, or multiple small papule types. Any kind of morphic lesion may come which is why it is called polymorphic eruption.

Initially, it is present overexposed part only but once the reaction triggers in body lesion can come in covered part also. Itching, peeling, and burning sensation are the main feature of this. Steroid creams and sunscreen are the main treatment therapy.

WHITE PATCH OVER FACE

It is a common skin condition in children and people who work a lot in direct sunlight. White scaly patch especially around eye, forehead, nose and below eye come symmetrically which are not much itchy but gets irritated in sunlight. Calcium supplements also give with steroid creams and sunscreen also given to the patient.

MELASMA, FRECKLES, SOLAR LENTIGINES

These all conditions are a very common and main concern of patients. Pigmentation over the face due to sunlight may come in any form. Melasma is the most common type of pigmentation.

Asian skin is widely affected by this condition. In this condition brownish to blackish patch around the nose and below eyes comes which are very resistant to treatment. Chemical peel and sunscreen are the main treatment line.

Freckles and lentigines are small-small spots over the face which look like multiple moles. TCA peel and sunscreen are effective treatments but Q-SWITCH laser is a quick and most effective method to treat.

SOLAR URTICARIA(ITCHING)

A person starts feeling itching all over the body whenever comes into the sunlight. Sometimes the itching is so severe that the patient needs immediate medical attention.

Swelling around the eye, lips may come with itching. Solar urticaria is a type of skin sensitivity due to sunlight that triggers multiple body reactions and causes itching, swelling. Excessive sweating further increases the itching. Antihistaminics, Steroids, Azathioprine, Methotrexate There is a wide range of medicine for its treatment.

SKIN AGEING, WRINKLES, ELASTOSIS

Sunlight exposure for any year causes damage to the water content of skin and collagen material of skin which further causes wrinkling, loss of skin tightness, and aging spots. Although As such there is no treatment for it but by applying sunscreen. A chemical peel, botox, filler, etc could be a temporary treatment.

SKIN CANCER, MELANOMA, B.C.C, S.C.C

These all are types of cancer that can be aggravated by sun exposure. White skin is very prone to get melanoma and B.C.C . Mole-like lesion increasing in size, changing in color, size, and texture. Oozing and bleeding could be adding features of cancer. Skin biopsy is the main tool to confirm the diagnosis and plastic surgery is the final way to treat.
